Overview
In the early 20th century, the Northeast Los Angeles region was a major gateway between Central Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley to the northwest, and the San Gabriel Valley to the east. A haven for artists, the region was home to Occidental College, the city's first museum, and a large inventory of distinct commercial and residential buildings associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement. Today, the neighborhoods of Eagle Rock, Highland Park, and other communities neighboring Occidental College are in decline, and are challenged by a number of protracted social problems. These include an overcrowded and deteriorated housing stock, economic decline along major commercial corridors, crime and gang activity, academic failure, child abuse and neglect, teenage pregnancy, and a variety of public health and environmental quality issues. The Northeast Los Angeles COPC is working with the Hathaway Family Resource Center and a network of 46 community organizations called the Northeast Community Resource Coordinating Council (NECRCC) on a variety of activities aimed at revitalizing the area. These activities focus on surveys and mapping, economic development, housing and homeownership, historic preservation, education, community website development, food access and nutrition, environment, and community greening.
