| Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey will receive a New Directions grant of $149,999 to build upon the Community Outreach Partnership Center's activities in Newark's West Side Park community. It is one of the most impoverished city areas, with nearly one-fourth of its land parcels still vacant following the 1967 civil disturbances in Newark. Neighborhood residents, community organizations, and the Consolidated Plan all identify public safety, fair and affordable housing, economic development, and building neighborhood capacity as the community's most pressing needs.
A 35-member Community Advisory Board identified 4 major categories for grant-funded activities: crime prevention and public safety, neighborhood planning and revitalization, fair and affordable housing, and economic development, including revitalization of the 16th Avenue commercial corridor.
