| San Jose State University will receive $399,979 to establish a Community Outreach Partnership Center in the 360-block neighborhood adjacent to the University. Unemployment in the neighborhood is four times the State rate and many of the residents experience both social and linguistic isolation.
Specific activities to be undertaken include:
1. Assisting the City with the planning and production of a master plan for the neighborhood, including mobilizing resident participation in the planning process.
2. Creating a Campus Environs Incubator Without Walls program to help individuals who reside in the area start or expand businesses.
3. Offering technology learning workshops at three local elementary schools to introduce children to meaningful uses of electronic technology.
4. Conducting workshops for local education professionals on how to get parents involved in school activities and helping these professionals develop action plans to increase involvement.
Six of the eight colleges in the University will be involved, demonstrating the wide-spread commitment to it.
The "Greek Life" student body of the University will also be involved in COPC implementation.
