Overview
The University of Alaska Anchorage will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program grant to assist the Russian Jack neighborhood of Anchorage. The neighborhood has an unemployment rate over twice that of the City average and over one half of the students in the neighborhood's schools are replaced by new students within a given year. Currently local service providers have targeted their efforts to other distressed neighborhoods, a situation that this grant is designed to address.

Activities that will be undertaken include:

1. Providing evening classes for residents, including computer instruction, that will lead to high school completion and English as a Second Language proficiency.

2. Determining ways to reduce the high mobility rate of neighborhood residents and its impact.

3. Developing programs to increase the number and variety of services available to neighborhood residents.

4. Offering after school and summer activities to reduce the incidence of unsupervised children and involve parents in their children's education.

5. Creating an information database of services available through out the City that is accessible at several neighborhood locations and uses touch screen technology.

Habitat for Humanity and the Anchorage School District will be providing matching funds for the project.
