| The University of California, San Diego will receive $400,000 to establish a Community Outreach Partnership Center in the City Heights neighborhood. This initiative will expand the activities of an existing partnership between the University, the County Department of Social Services, the City Departments of Public Health and Probation, the San Diego Unified School District and Community College District, the San Diego Housing Commission and community-based organizations serving the neighborhood.
This project, which is being implemented by the University's Department of Pediatrics, will involve activities including:
1. Developing computer-based learning programs for elementary and middle-school children.
2. Offering a performing arts program, through the City Moves Dance Foundation, that will develop the traditional arts and cultural assets of the community.
3. Providing apprenticeship training programs for AFDC recipients.
4. Offering health services prevention programs in local elementary schools.
Almost $1.3 million will be provided in matching funds, with $350,000 coming from local government sources, and $460,000 coming from foundations and other private sources.
