| The University of Nebraska at Omaha will receive $400,000 to implement a Community Outreach Partnership Centers program in the city's Enterprise Community, one of the most distressed areas in Nebraska. The program is designed to integrate the university's outreach and research activities into those of the Enterprise Community.
Activities to be undertaken include creating a Web site for the Enterprise Community and its neighborhood associations and providing Internet training to residents; implementing a family mentoring program to connect youth with caring role models to offer cultural and educational enrichment; providing student interns in the Omaha Housing Authority's study centers and reading programs; developing a geographic information system for the housing authority to track the location of its residents and detect discriminatory housing patterns; and creating a minority doctoral development program to place university doctoral assistants in nonprofit community-based organizations.
The project includes more than $400,000 in matching funds, with a substantial amount of this coming from the local United Way.
