Overview
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program grant of $400,000 to address locally-identified problems in four contiguous neighborhoods in Charlotte. These neighborhoods, which are part of the city's Enterprise Community, are Belmont/Piedmont Courts, Tryon Hills/Dillehay Courts, Optimist Park, and Villa Heights. These four neighborhoods are also part of the city's City Within A City plan, which was initiated in 1993 to identify inner-city neighborhoods that need special and concentrated attention.

Activities to be undertaken include expansion of a family resource center, both at its current site and to other sites; dissemination of information on fair housing, especially to the Hispanic community; provision of tutoring and afterschool programs to teens and their families; and building a coalition of neighborhood organizations to press for greater resources for their neighborhoods.

The City of Charlotte, the Housing Authority, and the Urban League will all play major roles in this project and are contributing matching resources to ensure its success.
