Overview

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program grant of $399,325 to assist the West Macedonia neighborhood of High Point, North Carolina. The neighborhood has declined significantly over the last 20 years as industry moved away to other areas of the town. The project will address the community's identified needs for identity and cohesiveness, crime prevention, jobs skills and education, employment, homeownership, and youth development.

Activities to be undertaken include creating a focus for the neighborhood through the establishment of a center that will provide youth activities and classes for adults on a wide range of topics from fair housing to welfare-to-work initiatives; establishing a neighborhood watch program, volunteer efforts to redesign an area of the neighborhood, and a junior police academy; providing information and assistance to residents on fair housing resources, rights, and laws; working with the PHA and local housing groups to develop affordable homeownership opportunities; and proving leadership and job preparedness training, in coordination with Guilford Technical Community College.

Community partners on the project include the City of High Point and several of its departments, the police department and the U.S. Attorney's Office, a local church and elementary school, and the Greensboro public library system.
