| The University of North Texas will receive $399,692 to implement a Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program in two neighborhoods in Dallas County (Parks at Wynnewood and Lakewest in West Dallas) in the Enterprise Community and one in Denton County (Owsley Addition). The project will address four critical needs: expanded community participation; improved access to jobs, healthcare, transportation, recreation, financial services, and education; improved educational attainment by all segments of the community; and more secure and inviting neighborhoods.
Activities to be undertaken include: creating and strengthening resident councils in public housing developments in the three neighborhoods; improving the health status of residents through expansion of local "Healthy Start" programs, which are aimed at children and youth and senior health clinics; implementing community policing programs; developing a music program to serve as a means of community building; and providing specialized occupation-oriented classes for AFDC mothers.
The project includes $1.1 million in matching funds, with most of the funding coming from the university's community partners.
