| The University of Pennsylvania has been awarded a $90,000 Community Development Work Study Program (CDWSP) grant to train a cohort of students with special skills in community building while at the Department of City and Regional Planning (DCRP), Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania. The Penn-West Philadelphia CDWSP provides a unique opportunity for the DCRP to recruit minority and economically disadvantaged students to earn a Master of City Planning (MCP) degree that blends practical experience with academic training in community building. The program focuses on West Philadelphia, an area suffering from high incidence of concentrated poverty and associated urban problems. It aims not only to train the Fellows through internship placements but also employ them as resources in the University of Pennsylvania's nationally recognized community-building efforts in the area. It places particular emphasis on linking the Fellows with local high school students to engage in educational projects designed to reduce dropout rates, increase sense of empowerment and knowledge about neighborhoods. To achieve these goals, the Penn-West Philadelphia CDWSP Fellows enroll in Penn's fully-accredited, 2-year MCP degree program, take specially tailored community-building courses and fulfill a two-part internship divided between placement in a West Philadelphia high school and a community development agency.
