Program: COPC
Year: 1994

Overview
The University of South Florida will provide comprehensive outreach to four neighborhoods: East Tampa, the University of South Florida (Hillsborough County), Florence Villa (Winter Haven), and Tarpon Springs. These neighborhoods were selected because of their high levels of unemployment, significant low-income minority population, substantial increases in crime and substance abuse, lack of affordable housing, and the existence of interested viable community organizations. Specific activities, tailored to each of these neighborhoods, and developed in consultation with the Project Advisory Committee, will be implemented. Activities will include: a local employer job development program; one-stop employment and career development counseling; training for small business owners; community empowerment through expansion of existing community-based organizations; and development of a plan for improvement of neighborhood infrastructure and transportation.

In addition to strong participation by neighborhood organizations and local businesses, local governments and the State government will also be partners in this project. The University of South Florida has been awarded $370,417 for its Community Outreach Partnership Centers grant.
