| Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) will receive $399,358 to provide outreach and applied research to the Carver community in Richmond. The workplan for the project represents the culmination of a year-long joint planning process with the Carver Area Civic Improvement League (CACIL).
Specific activities to be undertaken, in concert with CACIL, include: implementing community policing and neighborhood watch programs; creating and implementing a community development plan for the neighborhood; developing the neighborhood school as a community school to increase student performance, integrate health and social services for the community, and promote job training; and implementing at the university "Hire Local" and "Buy Local" programs that will support Carver individuals and businesses.
VCU AmeriCorps members, the United Way Services of Richmond, and the city will also be participating in the program.
