Overview
The Upper Manhattan communities of Washington Heights and Inwood (WH/I) are adjacent to the West Bronx Community where Bronx Community College (BCC) is located. WH/I is predominantly immigrant (Dominican) community where many residents are dealing with the daily struggles of pervasive poverty and overcrowded housing. It is a community with major needs, and limited and overextended resources, especially for the delivery of quality adult education and vocational skills training.

Through this project, the college will work with the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC) to deliver relevant instruction and training services to local residents. NMIC is a designated Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) and the designated lead employment service for the North Manhattan segment of the Northern Manhattan/Bronx Empowerment Zone.

The Hispanic-Serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) funds will be used to retrofit and equip space at NMIC that will be used as classrooms for care worker training, provide occupational and basic skills instruction delivered by Bronx Community College for individuals with limited English language competency; and provide outreach, career and educational advisement and employment placement services that will be provided by both BCC and NMIC.

Since 1999, BCC and NMIC have worked together to increase the accessibility of the College to the Dominican community of Washington Heights/Inwood (WH/I) in Upper Manhattan by assisting WH/I residents to gain skills needed for employment and/or college entry. NMIC is committing $141,100 in In-kind services in support of this initiative.
