Overview
Gavilan College in Gilroy, California is a 2-year California public community college with an enrollment of approximately 4,500 students, most of whom are enrolled part-time. The enrollment is approximately 48 percent Hispanic and 48 percent Caucasian. The target area, Census Tract 5136.01 in the City of Gilroy, is 80 percent low- to moderate-income Hispanic, about 35 percent of whom were born outside the United States.

It is within this area that Gavilan College will create a Neighborhood Education and Technology Center. The project will renovate an existing 7,200-square-foot "old school shop" building adjacent to the new Gilroy Unified School District (GUSD) neighborhood resource center portable buildings. This new complex will provide space for adult education classes, a community technology center, and a permanent location for two programs--the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) and the "Mujeres Pueden" (Women Can) job-training program.
