Overview
Northern Essex Community College's (NECC's) Hispanic-Serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) project, the Centro Educacional Hermanas Mirabal (Mirabal Sisters' Literacy and Educational Center), will foster women self-sufficiency and education through the development of a literacy and resource center, serving Latina childcare providers in the neighborhoods surrounding NECC's campuses. The goal for the center is to bridge Latina providers, families, schools, educational resources and community child development programs to affirm and empower community family providers as teachers and mentors within their community. Latina providers have an important socioeconomic role as residents, caregivers, and teachers. Through a community leadership program, partnerships for remedial literacy support services and practitioner trainings, we seek to affirm their capacity as valuable citizens of the City of Lawrence.
