Program: COPC
Year: 2002

Overview
Jackson State University, community-based organizations, community residents, volunteers, students, local government collaborators, and private sector partners propose to develop and implement a Jackson e-City Community Outreach Partnership Center (COPC) Project in West Jackson. E-City COPC will provide outreach programs and services that address education, capacity building, economic development, computer/job training, housing education, and the environment. Specifically, the following activities or services will be developed as a result of the COPC grant:

  • e-City COPC.
  • Neighborhood Education and Training Services (NETS), which will provide classes, training sessions, workshops, and seminars in computer literacy, job skills, technical training, affordable housing, and homebuyer education.
  • e-City COPC faith-based train-the-trainer program.
  • Small business assistance center outreach services.
  • e-City COPC computer recycling project.

Project Objectives:

  • Assist the university in expanding its urban mission of providing high quality services to the West Jackson Community.
  • Promote and implement appropriate transformation of the West Jackson Community through partnerships and coordination with Jackson State University and its community partners.
  • Identify and provide additional resources that address the urgent needs identified by community residents and organizations.

The e-City COPC will be an extension of the university's major community revitalization initiative known as "e-City." The e-City initiative has been in progress since 2000 in the Jackson State, West Jackson area. The COPC project will be a complement to e-City with its one-stop-shop center approach to information, training, and services to the community. The eventual outcomes of e-City are to empower its residents, increase self-sufficiency, and create wealth in the community.
