| The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) will assist economically disadvantaged and minority students at two Texas universities. NCTCOG is a voluntary organization comprised of local governments for the purpose of strengthening the individual and collective capabilities of local governments to recognize regional opportunities, resolve regional problems, and to make joint regional decisions. CDWSP funds will be used by students at the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Arlington. The CDWSP manager recruits work placement sites from its local government membership which includes cities, counties, school districts, nonprofits, and other community building organizations and the demand for CDWSP interns remains high, as evidenced by the list of more than 75 sites waiting to host a student. The academic experience provides students with the knowledge and foundation they need to enter community-building fields, but NCTOG offers much more to help students locate and obtain employment--a video-taped mock interview performed by local professionals; a job-hunting seminar done by the vice president of a local government recruiting firm; and a NCTOG-produced publication distributed to local governments and nonprofit community building agencies that provides the resumes of graduating students, subscriptions to numerous government and nonprofit JobsMart publications, and membership in two strong local associations.
