| Savannah State University (SSU) intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to conduct the following activities: the expansion of a Youth Building Art Skills Training program for youth ages 16-24 and increase affordable housing. The Youth Building Art Skill Training program will unite community partners in providing training for careers in the building arts, with particular emphasis on certification for lead-based paint abatement, energy-smart building, and historical preservation, while increasing the stock of affordable housing through the daily hands-on field work. SSU also intends to have individuals work with seasoned professionals to build a new house and substantially renovate a second in communities where lower income persons are finding it harder to afford safe, healthy, and accessible housing.
