Overview
Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will receive a Historically Black Colleges and Universities program grant of $550,000 to provide community development services in East Baton Rouge Parish. Grant funds will be used to construct two homes for low- to moderate-income residents; initiate an Adopt-a-Block Project to clean up and maintain low-income neighborhoods; create a housing stabilization program stressing homeowner retention and maintenance; implement a program to move subsidized renters to homeownership; and provide training and technical assistance to community partners in job creation, board training, strategic planning, fundraising, and board member responsibilities. The university will collaborate with the Corporation for National Service, Scotland Community Development Corporation, North Baton Rouge Learning Center and Community Development Corporation, Greater King David Baptist Church, the City of Baton Rouge Parish Division of Social Services and Human Development, and the East Baton Rouge Parish Office of Community Development.
