Overview
Chicago is known as a city of neighborhoods, which makes community development essential. The University of Chicago's Community Development Work Study Program (CDWSP) encourages participation in community service in a number of ways including course work, mentor programs, internships and jobs, student run volunteer organizations, and Public Service Fellowship. The core curriculum examines a wide range of community development issues, which include religion and the city, youth gang problems, basic demographic analysis, urban health care, and public finance/economics. CDWSP placements occur at agencies like the Chicago Association of Neighborhood Development Organizations (CANDO), the city planning department, and other community organizations.
