Overview
Alcorn State University, located near Lorman, Mississippi, will receive a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) program grant of $497,929 to continue the outreach initiative begun by its housing grant program and revolving loan funds for both business development and housing, using pooled resources from the public and private sectors. In addition, the university will expand the capacity of Traceway Community Development Corporation (CDC)--founded in 1998 by a HBCU grant by creating a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) under this grant to serve Claiborne and Jefferson Counties. The Traceway CDC's current services and programs will be expanded. A small business development grant program will establish at least four small businesses in the target communities during the life of the grant and provide opportunities for training and employment for at least 10 low-income residents. The project will also collaborate with other agencies and the private sector to provide GED training and counseling in homeownership and money management for welfare recipients and other low-income citizens.
