Overview
To help narrow the "digital divide" in Mobile, Alabama, Bishop State Community College (BSCC) has established a Community Information Technology Training Center that offers computer and other technology experience to low-income middle school-age youth and their parents and teachers. A state-supported 2-year college, BSCC has four campuses located in Mobile. Approximately 58 percent of BSCC's nearly 4,000 students are African American.

BSCC's partners in this activity are Out of the Box Solutions, a California-based IT solutions provider, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama, which serve Club members as well as non-members. The four clubs that are participating with BSCC are located near three of BSCC campuses in Mobile, and serve areas that have a mean family income of $11,721, with 61 percent of families considered low-income. This is in comparison with a $37,984 average income and 22 percent low-income status for the city as a whole.
