Overview
Using a $550,000 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant, Lawson State Community College, a 54-year-old U.S. Department of Education-designated HBCU located in southwest Birmingham, Alabama, will conduct an Affordable Home Building program in and around its population service area of Birmingham. The defined target area for the project comprises the college’s immediate surrounding community—census tract 131—specifically, the community of Grasselli, as well as the Birmingham Enterprise community, which includes census tracts 29, 30.2, 39, and 40. Grasselli consists of six neighborhoods: Industrial City, Toppy City, West Goldwire, Hillman Park, Hillman Gardens, and Grasselli. According to 2000 U.S. Census data, census tract 131, with 5,365 residents, is larger than the Enterprise community’s average of 3,219.
