| Gadsden State Community College, a Historically Black College, will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program New Grant of $400,000 to work with more than 4,400 low-income persons living in and adjacent to 7 public housing communities in Gadsden, Alabama. The grant is designed to help the college reduce the prevalence and severity of multidimensional urban problems; design a comprehensive and effective welfare-to-work initiative; and empower and promote self-sufficiency.
Among the activities to be undertaken are: - Conducting a community mapping and assets analysis project to identify and build on the strengths of the communities.
- Facilitating the establishment of a Community Development Corporation to address ongoing housing, redevelopment, and social service delivery needs.
- Creating a leadership program for local community leaders, advocates, and resident associations.
- Beautifying housing development grounds and organizing clean-up days.
- Working on several projects to increase parent participation in early childhood enrichment activities.
- Developing and offering parenting classes covering all aspects of parenting.
More than $500,000 in matching funds will be provided by the college's community partners, including the United Way, the Greater Gadsden Housing Authority, and the ACT Coalition.
