| The Valley Street Campus of Gadsden State Community College (GSCC) proposes to establish and institutionalize a community development center (CDC) to serve a target population of more than 4,400 low-income persons living in and adjacent to 7 public housing communities within Gadsden, Alabama. Located 55 miles northeast of Birmingham, Alabama, GSCC serves the Appalachian region of Northeast Alabama, an area that includes 10 counties with a total population of 775,000. The establishment of a CDC will expand the College's role in addressing housing and economic needs. The CDC will provide educational opportunities, job training, and placement; support services as components of a welfare-to-work initiative; healthcare and wellness programs; family and early childhood education programs; and workshops on business development, homeownership, and personal finances. GSCC's key partner in this endeavor is the Greater Gadsden Housing Authority.
