Overview
Florida A&M University (FAMU) will use the $542,674 Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant to further enhance the FAMU Community Development Corporation (CDC). The CDC provides direct community and economic development services to low-income residents who reside in nine low-income census tracts in Tallahassee, Gadson County, and in the Jackson County Florida Enterprise Community. FAMU CDC plans to utilize HBCU funds to create a business incubator facility, enhance educational and training programs designed to help low-income persons obtain jobs, and to merge the cultural amenities of the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center with those of Florida A&M by the development of a mixed use commercial corridor connecting these two properties. The ultimate goal of this project is to preserve the minority interests in the target community and bridge the economic and social divide from south to north, bringing minority businesses to the more lucrative northern edges, while creating an historically, socially, and architecturally appropriate gateway in the FAMU campus.
