| Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina, will use its $500,321 Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant to address high rates of poverty; high rates of unemployment; the high percent of persons older than 25 years of age without a diploma/equivalent; lack of affordable, decent, safe housing; and lack of cultural and recreational activities in the target area. These needs were identified in the 2000 Census Report, 2002 South Carolina Statistical Abstract, and input gathered from residents through community forums.
