| Voorhees College intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to address priority needs of high rates of poverty, high rates of unemployment and lack of affordable, decent, safe housing in the surrounding City of Denmark, South Carolina. The college plans the following activities to address these needs: 1) continuing the operation of the Voorhees-Denmark Community Development Corporation; 2) providing homeownership opportunities to low- to moderate-income citizens; and 3) expanding the microenterprise/community center. The primary goal of the proposed project is to expand Voorhees College’s role and effectiveness in addressing community development needs in Denmark and surrounding areas. The objectives of the proposed project are housing development, with a strong emphasis on homeownership through a lease-to-own program, and job creation and training through the microenterprise center and One-Stop Career Center.
