Overview
The University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas, will receive a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant of $300,000 to develop workforce training programs and outreach activities to improve the long-term economic self-sufficiency of low- and moderate-income Virgin Islanders. Training programs will be targeted to two business sectors that are critical to the Islands economic development prospects: hospitality services and computer and information technology. Approximately 60 individuals (30 on St. Thomas and 30 on St. Croix) will be recruited and trained under the grant. Training will incorporate a career ladder approach, offering pre-employment and more advanced training components designed to help these individuals achieve their full economic potential. This is the university’s first HBCU grant.
