Overview
The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, will use its $541,000 Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant to address needs on the island of St. Croix. UVI, in partnership with Our Town Frederiksted (OTF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of buildings in the town of Frederiksted and local and off-island businesses, will revitalize neighborhoods and address critical community development needs through UVI’s expanded participation in a public-private partnership. The town of Frederiksted, located on the island of St. Croix, was officially designated an Enterprise Zone by Executive Order No. 370-1997 in July 1997, and as such qualifies businesses in Frederiksted for tax incentives and other economic development program benefits. It is a town of historic and cultural significance, with more historic buildings per capita than any other state under the U.S. flag. This area is in critical need of infrastructure improvements and community reinvestment to stabilize the town and build the economy of the area.
