Overview
Bluefield State College in West Virginia will receive a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant of $300,000 to establish a community development corporation (CDC). Activities to be funded include rehabilitation of a building to house the CDC (currently known as Wade School), creation of a redevelopment plan for the neighborhood surrounding the building, helping establish or expand 10 microbusinesses; and providing technical assistance to 20 community-based organizations. The goal of the project is to help alleviate the problems associated with the lack of quality educational opportunities, low literacy skills, and unemployment. The total cost of the project is $600,000, with the college’s partners providing the remaining funds. This is the college’s first HBCU grant.
