Overview
Johnson C. Smith University intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to implement an urgent grant rehabilitation program to: alleviate unsafe housing conditions for owner-occupied homes of residents ages 55 and older or permanently disabled individuals 60-percent or below the area median income and located in the Northwest Corridor boundaries; conduct Homebuyer Education workshops that will educate participants on pre- and post-homeownership counseling; hire an off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer to serve as a safety patrol and provide surveillance at the area criminal hot spot; and provide technical assistance for a newly created Women Enterprise Project for low- to moderate-income females in an economically underserved urban area to develop a business.
