Overview
North Carolina A&T State University intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Category II grant to implement five activities that will increase homeownership, create and stabilize small and minority-owned businesses, teach vocational skills development that will lead to employment, and provide direct assistance to grassroots and community organizations. First, the project will continue operating a HUD-funded Minority Enterprise Development program and expand its services into small business incubation in partnership with the Interdisciplinary Center for Entrepreneurship and E-Business. The second task will be a dual initiative focused on the development of vocational skills that lead to employment. Third, the project will partner with the Greensboro Housing Authority to carry out the “Welcome Home” program, which provides homeownership opportunities through direct financial assistance for first-time homebuyers; education on the home-buying process, fair housing, debt management, and financial literacy; and mortgage default counseling to assist homeowners in immediate jeopardy of losing their homes. Task four activities include providing sub-awards to Joseph’s House, a grassroots organization providing shelter for homeless young adults, and the Greensboro Life Skills Center to support parenting skills. With the fifth task, the project will enhance the capacity of the university’s Community Outreach Resource Center through direct financial assistance for programmatic and operational support.
