| Allen University intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant to expand its capacity to support, improve, and empower Columbia city neighborhoods most in need--the predominantly African-American communities of Waverly, Lyon Street, and King Park. Through this project they plan to help alleviate the urgent needs of Empowerment Zone residents and provide affordable and quality homes for low- to moderate-income people who seek homeownership. Specifically, these funds will be used to: 1) acquire a minimum of four abandoned, substandard housing stocks and two Columbia Housing Authority-owned empty lots to renovate and construct new homes; 2) increase homeownership capacity in these neighborhoods though training and counseling; and 3) provide on-the-job housing construction/renovation training opportunities for participants.
