| Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, will receive a Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant of $301,505 to expand and strengthen the role and effectiveness of its Department of Architecture in addressing community development needs throughout the City of Hampton. The project will develop and implement afterschool and intersession programs for Spratley Middle School teens in the areas of architecture, neighborhoods, and community revitalization, and form an "architecture club" that will address current neighborhood issues. Other education activities will include implementing effective teaching strategies for teachers and reinforcing home study teaching techniques for parents to increase test scores among children in the language arts area, and initiation of a two-month Summer Day Camp on neighborhood identity for at-risk teens. The project will also work with governmental agencies, community representatives, and other stakeholders to enhance fair housing outreach strategies through education and training forums and by developing print materials and other media to disseminate fair housing information. Hampton University students will work with local and national professionals to develop prototype designs for affordable and accessible housing, with a primary goal of enhancing housing choice for elderly and disabled persons. Special emphasis will be placed on designing retrofit schemes for the existing housing stock.
