Overview
West Virginia State University (formerly known as West Virginia State College) intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to purchase, furnish, and operate a Community Economic Development Center to address poverty, homeownership, educational, and employment issues. This center will be housed in the U.S. Census Bureau's Census Tracts 7 and 8, a designated urban HUBZone. This area is one of the most economically and socially challenged in the city of Charleston, the state capital of West Virginia. Specifically, the center will provide a needed training and meeting facility that can be utilized by local community development groups such as HOPE Community Development Corporation, MAAC (Maximizing Achievement of African American Children in Kanawha County), the New Covenant Community Development Corporation, and the Minority Business Development Corporation.
