| Bristol Bay Campus (BBC) is an extended campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is a nonresidential 4-year public institution that encompasses a 50,000-square-mile region and serves 33 Alaska Native villages. BBC’s mission is to provide rural Alaskans with educational opportunities that can effect social and economic changes in their communities and thus protect and enrich the quality of their lives and culture. The extreme distances between the villages, the weather, remoteness, and lack of amenities that most of these Native villages endure have resulted in limited economic opportunities and support services for the residents. BBC proposes to help village residents meet these challenges by providing training opportunities in building maintenance and construction trades, village computer support, and the development of Internet-based microenterprises. This program will result in communities planning and developing the capacity to build and maintain energy-efficient community buildings and homes and to develop entrepreneurial endeavors. BBC will work closely with the Bristol Bay Housing Authority, Alaska Works Partnership, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, and the Southwest Alaska Vocational and Education Center.
