Overview
University of Alaska, Fairbanks—Bristol Bay Campus, in partnership with community and tribal agencies in a desire to continue a developing cycle of cultural and economic empowerment will use its Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities (AN/NHIAC) grant to: 1) establish high-demand counseling program in local villages that will address issues of distressed communities and will lead to increased quality of life and self-efficiency by decreasing dependency on substance abuse, interpersonal violence, and other negative behaviors; 2) provide access to economic and community development through delivery of vocational and employability skills training in high-demand occupational areas including but not limited to construction, mining, building maintenance, and repair; and 3) diversify targeted village economies through development of technical support and multimedia teaching strategies to place-based secondary and post-secondary students to increase rural resident participation, persistence, and retention in the area of technology, business, and social services.
