| Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC) is a tribally controlled institution of higher education established in 1972 and is one of the original charted members of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. TMCC is a 2-year degree-granting institution with one 4-year degree program in the field of elementary education. TMCC proposes to connect all buildings at the Anishinabe Wellness Center facility to the Belcourt rural water and waste disposal system. The current method of water and waste disposal relies on a system consisting of two septic tanks and a drain field. While this system has served the college in the past, its growing population has added a strain on the existing system and increased the danger of the sewer leaching into the lake system. The concept for the wellness center will greatly enhance and expand the college’s current curricula in the areas of health, agriculture research, forestry, aquaculture, horticulture and horticulture technology, animal husbandry, environmental science, biology, and Native American culture. In addition, this project will provide the reservation community with a facility for combating chronic disease and strengthening health-related endeavors, diabetes prevention, and youth leadership.
