Overview
Located in the heart of Albuquerque, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute serves a broad community comprised of Native American students from 22 tribes in New Mexico. Over 50 percent of the student body has incomes that are below the poverty level, and a census report found that 20 percent of all American Indians in New Mexico were below the age of 5. These two factors have a direct impact on the students' educational opportunities, as identified by a Childcare Needs Assessment Survey conducted by the Institute in 2000. Not only is there a tremendous need for quality childcare among enrolled students, but the survey found that there is a large pool of students who are not able to enroll because of a lack of available childcare.
