Overview
Located in the Santa Fe Tri-County Region, the Institute of American Indian Arts serves a community of 188,825 residents who live throughout the Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Rio Arriba Counties. Despite its 140-acre campus and its world-class Museum, the Institute has, in the past, only offered four two-year degree programs. The need for increased educational opportunities for Native Americans has resulted in the Institute's newly created four-year programs that are dedicated to the study, creative application, preservation and care of Native American arts and cultures. This is in response to the fact that, even though the region is the one of the most diverse areas for Native Americans and Indian arts and cultures in the Nation, between 68 and 83 percent of local Tribal artists earn less than $7,000 per year. As part of this focus on educational enrichment, the Institute of American Indian Arts will build a 55,800 square foot, two-story Library and Technology Center on its Santa Fe campus to increase the educational and economic opportunities for local Tribal residents.
