| California State Polytechnic Institute, Pomona will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program New Grant of $399,979 to work with its community partners to assist residents living in and around the Angela Chanslor area of Pomona, California. A great majority of these residents are newly arrived Mexican immigrants. The proposed activities are designed to increase family capacity building and resident empowerment by providing educational and community building resources, opportunities for job training, and increased access to social and health services.
Among the activities to be undertaken are: - Establishing a community learning center for residents of all ages.
- Creating a neighborhood-based job training and resource center.
- Developing a family services information and referral program to help public school students and their families obtain basic health screening and education and access to health and social service providers.
- Working with the city to create defensible space projects to deter crime.
- Providing elementary school children with academic enrichment and social development activities to improve academic performance and deter children from experimenting with drugs.
A community fair will be held annually to celebrate the partners' and the residents' efforts and achievements.
