| The University of Texas at San Antonio will use its $85,278 Community Development Work Study Program (CDWSP) grant to fund economically disadvantaged and minority students in its Master of Public Administration (MPA) program. The MPA program provides a substantial foundation in management, administration, analysis, and urban/metropolitan policy issues. Students will acquire the skills needed to succeed in a variety of public service positions. The MPA program integrates substantive policy issues and problems into each of our courses, providing students with a practical understanding of policy and administration.
The CDWSP students will experience three work study placements covering two academic years and the intervening summer, from among four available sites. One placement may be with the Alamo Area Council of Governments, providing exposure to the work of a regional council and a sense of the diversity of metropolitan governments and interests. Another internship may be with the Neighborhood Resource Center and one of its affiliated neighborhood organizations. This is designed to expose the students to the operation of a neighborhood group, and the concerns its faces. An alternative community organization placement may be with Communities Organized for Public Service, one of the most widely recognized and effective community-based organizations in the nation. The final placement site is the city of San Antonio's Department of Community Initiatives. This public agency provides an array of social and community services for a largely minority and low-income clientele.
