Overview
Ilisagvik College will receive an Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities Program grant of $332,754 to create an Economic Development and Training Center for the North Slope Borough, Alaska’s largest and northern-most region. The Center will address the region’s needs for small business development, resource coordination, and diversification of the region’s revenue base.

The Borough government is currently facing a multi-year period of sharply declining revenues that will have a disproportionate affect on the Alaska Native residents who occupy lower level positions in the local economy. It is the College’s intention to help prepare the Inupiat and non-Inupiat residents for the imminent economic changes. This commitment also extends to the rural villages of Anaktuvuk Pass, Atqasuk, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Hope, Point Lay, and Wainwright.

To accomplish this comprehensive goal, the College will be coordinating municipal, village, corporate, and educational resources. Almost $250,000 will in other public and private funds will be leveraged for the project.
