| The University of Hawaii at Manoa will receive an Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities Program grant of $333,280 to expand its role in addressing the community development needs in the Native Hawaiian communities of Papakolea and Maunalaha Valley. A majority of the residents of these two communities are low- and moderate-income and Native Hawaiian.
The University, in partnership with several community-based organizations and the residents themselves, will undertake the following activities:
Assisting in the rehabilitation of the Papakolea Community Center;
Aiding in the construction of the Maunalaha Valley Community Center; and
Developing and expanding recreational, educational, community visioning, and economic development programs for the residents of these communities, with special effort to incorporate Native Hawaiian culture and language.
