Overview
University of Hawaii–West Oahu (UHWO) will use its Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities (AN/NHIAC) grant in partnership with its community partner—the Wai`anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and Malama Recovery Program—toward the construction of a Drug and Vocational Rehabilitation Facility. The proposed facility will consists of a total of 2,040 square feet of space and will be located on the grounds of the main campus of the Health Center. The facility will be used to provide clinical services for an expanded drug rehabilitation program; initiate vocational rehabilitation as part of the drug recovery program; and provide training facilities for the staff as well as student interns. The proposed treatment facility will significantly expand UHWO’s institutional role and effectiveness in addressing the poor health and socioeconomic conditions of the rural, federally designated, medically underserved community of Wai`anae. This facility will assist in the delivery of expanded drug rehabilitation services and is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s economy by improving the healthcare services and thus improve the quantity and quality of its workforce and on individual incomes.
