Overview
South Carolina State University intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to fund the expansion of the university’s role and effectiveness in addressing community development needs in the County of Orangeburg through its community development corporation, the Northeastern Corridor of Orangeburg Community Development Corporation. The objective of the proposed project is to create safe, decent, affordable housing for single, female heads of household that currently live at Roosevelt Garden Apartment, a HUD-supported housing complex. The housing development program consists of the construction of a subdivision of 15 new houses, the rehabilitation of two duplexes to supply four rental units, and housing counseling to help these families progress toward becoming self-sufficient and achieve the American dream of becoming a homeowner.
