Overview
South Carolina State University intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to expand its role and effectiveness in addressing community development needs through Project Restoration, a project of the university’s Northeastern Corridor of Orangeburg Community Development Corporation (CDC). The project’s objective is to create safe, decent, affordable housing for the elderly, minorities, and single, female heads of household, who have lived in a HUD-supported housing complex.

This proposed activity consists of acquiring and demolishing 14 dilapidated, vacant properties, constructing 6 houses on 6 of these cleared sites, and rehabilitating 10 owner-occupied housing units. Project Restoration will allow the university to provide decent affordable housing to 16 families who are low- to moderate-income—10 of which will have the conditions of their current homes improved to prevent their home from becoming dilapidated, and 6 of which will have the homebuying process explained to them and will become first-time homeowners.
