| Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas, will receive a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant of $338,274 to build a community and technology center on the Jarvis campus to house programs serving nearby communities. The project will provide opportunities for low- and moderate-income rural families to obtain affordable housing, become economically self-sufficient, and learn the skills that will enable them to meet the demands of a technology-driven economy. The grant will fund the construction of a 5,000-square-foot facility that will furnish the home base for the East Texas Community Empowerment Corporation, a community development corporation whose mission is to develop housing and economic opportunities for low-income families, and serve as a meeting facility for other community groups. Construction of the facility will also enable the HBCU to expand existing programs in workforce training, adult continuing education, and service learning, while allowing it to launch new initiatives in afterschool care for children and minority entrepreneurship.
