| Located on the Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation in north-central Montana-home to the Chippewa Cree Tribe-Stone Child College was established in 1984 for the preservation and maintenance of tribal culture, language, and history and to provide educational training for tribal members. The Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation suffers from chronically high unemployment rates, with median income levels less than half of the national average. At the College's founding, it was the feeling of tribal leaders that the college was necessary both to preserve tribal identity and to meet the educational needs of students who were not being well served by off-reservation colleges and vocational training programs.
Stone Child College will use its Tribal College and Universities Program (TCUP) grant to help construct the "Stone Child College Academic Facility," which will provide much needed classroom space and allow the College to upgrade its technological resources. The new building is needed to replace an inadequate and unsafe facility and is the product of extensive planning and fund raising. Stone Child College's partners in this campaign include the Chippewa Cree Tribe, the American Indian College Fund, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, through a Community Facilities Grant awarded by the Rural Development Program. A Building Committee composed of representatives from community agencies, College faculty and administrative staff, and a College Board member serves in an advisory and review capacity and works to solicit community involvement.
